BLACK OWL / PROCESS ENGINEERING

Early access · Desktop application

A clearer path from
process to plant.

Design basis to P&ID in one connected project, with no re-keying between spreadsheets and drawing tools.

Define your design basis. Build flow diagrams. Balance your process and develop engineering deliverables — with the project context kept together.

CONNECTED PROCESS ENGINEERING

Bring your process design into focus.

Tray column cutaway · Liquid flows down, vapour rises

Move from a design basis to flow diagrams, balances and engineering deliverables in one project.

Black Owl brings the context of early engineering work together: the components you define, the streams you connect and the equipment you develop. Built for chemical and process engineers working through the decisions that shape a plant.

01 / THE WORKFLOW

Follow the process.
Keep the context.

From first assumptions to detailed diagrams, Black Owl follows the way early engineering work progresses.

Step 01 of 08

Design Basis

Capture scope, product, battery limits and operating basis in one place.

What this step produces

  • Scope and product definition
  • Battery limits
  • Operating basis every later step draws on

02 / CAPABILITIES

Engineering tools.
A shared project foundation.

One connected project

Design basis, components, block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams live in one project file, so a change in one place is visible everywhere.

Block flow diagrams

Draw process blocks such as mixers, reactors and splitters, and connect them with numbered streams that carry phase, flow, temperature and pressure.

Process flow diagrams

Place pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, reactors, columns, mixers, condensers and splitters, and route the lines between them.

Material balance

Run the material balance from the block flow diagram and see mass flows on each stream, with a status showing whether the results are current.

Components

Maintain the components for the project, with molecular weights used by the balance.

Thermodynamics settings

Choose the property package and mixing rule for the project. Package suitability depends on your system; you remain responsible for that choice.

04 / WHO IT’S FOR

Built for the people
who shape a plant.

Black Owl is made for the early, decision-heavy stages of a process project, before detailed design takes over.

Process engineers

Take a process from design basis to P&ID without re-keying data between tools.

Engineering firms and consultants

Keep each project’s basic engineering in one record the whole team can follow.

Plant owners and technical services

Develop studies for new units and plant changes with the project context kept together.

Universities and students

Where Black Owl fits

Many teams carry early engineering across spreadsheets, drawing tools and a simulator. Black Owl keeps that work in one project.

Process simulators remain the right tool for rigorous modelling. Black Owl connects the basic engineering work around your process.

ENGINEERING JUDGMENT FIRST

Structure the work.
Own the decisions.

Flow control loop · Transmitter → controller → control valve

Software supports the process. Engineers remain responsible for the design.

Review assumptions, property-package suitability, reference defaults and calculated results against your project requirements. Black Owl is intended to support early process and basic engineering; outputs need qualified engineering review before use.

A CLOSER LOOK

Questions,
answered.

A practical introduction to Black Owl.

What is Black Owl designed for?

Black Owl is an early process and basic engineering workspace for chemical and process engineers. Its workflow connects design basis, components, flow diagrams, material balance, equipment sizing and engineering deliverables.

Are the application screenshots real?

Yes. The workspace images show Black Owl engineering demo projects. The 3D plant and animations on this page are illustrative concepts, not models produced by the application.

Can I download or try Black Owl?

Black Owl is in early access. A public installer and a 14-day trial are planned. Request early access to get a walkthrough and hear first when builds are available.

Do results need engineering review?

Yes. A qualified engineer must review assumptions, inputs, methods, reference defaults and outputs against the requirements of the project before relying on them.

Coffee break

Between calculations, play Owl Run.

Guide the owl through the pipework, collect every flow pulse and dodge the plant faults. Grab a valve to turn the tables.
